"In this world, women are judged inferior until they prove themselves, and men are judged superior until they prove what fools they are." - Shechem LaFayette

In 1988, Shechem Lafayette found himself in a Federal Prison, serving 39 years, for a crime he did not commit. His journey since has taken him from the depths of rage and disappointment to the heights of self evaluation, self education, and activism.

During his eighteen years of confinement, he determined wisely to champion his own cause for redemption. In so doing, he has also become an inspiration to fellow inmates and even prison officials. He has in fact become an effective lawyer, successfully representing inmates in their struggle for justice. He has taken a very keen interest in documenting and championing the causes of women inmates.

"Women Behind Bars," is a powerful investigation of the frequently cruel treatment which many women prisoners find themselves subjected to.

Rape, sexual harassment, and both mental and physical abuse are among several acts visited upon women inmates.

Separation from families and bonafide male companionship, as well as lack of education, are a prescription for recidivism.

Shechem's insights on the impact of such mistreatment is a gripping account of what really happens to women behind bars. Surely the impacts are not confined within prison walls. When women are mistreated, or ill prepared for reentry into society, their battle to live healthy, productive lives is severely crippled.

DR. Cathryn Parkman-LaFayette is the wife of Shechem Lafeyette. Their combined efforts are a mission to expose the inequities in prison life for women. She earned her M.A. in school psychology in 1976 from Governors State University located in University Park, Illinois. In 1996, she earned two doctorate degrees, one as a physician of naturopathic medicine, and the other in public administration, specializing in domestic and foreign affairs, at the LaSalle University in Mandeville, Louisiana.
